The Story of Exotic Mountain Honey

High in the rugged wilderness of Humla, where the Himalayas touch the heavens, lies a tradition as timeless as the mountains themselves. For generations, villagers have journeyed to untouched forests perched more than 4,000 meters above sea level, seeking nature’s rarest treasure: wild mountain honey.

In the spring months of Chaitra and Baishakh (March–April), these guardians of tradition embark on a two-day trek, navigating narrow, treacherous trails carved through the pristine mountains. Carrying handmade wooden beehives, they carefully place them on ledges—safe from the reach of predators. With hope and patience, they leave the hives to the mercy of the wild, trusting the bees to fill them with honey infused with the essence of rare.

Six months later, in Ashoj and Kartik (September–October), the villagers return, braving the same perilous journey to discover their fortune. Those blessed by nature collect the golden nectar, a reward for their endurance and faith. This honey, considered a divine elixir, is first offered to the gods before being used as a sacred remedy throughout the year.
